What Is Rare Genetic Disorders

Georgia Pediatric Program

Rare genetic disorders are uncommon conditions caused by mutations or changes in a person’s DNA, often affecting multiple body systems and leading to complex medical, developmental, or physical challenges. Children with rare genetic disorders may experience symptoms such as developmental delays, seizures, muscle weakness, feeding difficulties, mobility limitations, sensory issues, or the need for specialized medical equipment and ongoing monitoring. Daily routines may require extra support, including assistance with bathing, dressing, transferring, medication administration, and managing feeding or respiratory devices. Many children benefit from multidisciplinary therapies—such as physical, occupational, speech, or behavioral therapy—to promote development, improve functional skills, and enhance quality of life. Programs like GAPP (Georgia Pediatric Program) provide essential in-home skilled nursing services at no cost to families, offering individualized care, help with daily activities, and support for complex medical needs, ensuring that children with rare genetic disorders can live safely, comfortably, and confidently within their homes and communities.

The In-Home Skilled Nursing Program is designed to serve eligible members based on a medical necessity determination for children under the age of 20 years 11 months. We are here to make an even better environment for you and your child to ensure that they receive the supports that they need.
