Gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) are essential for children who need feeding support. However, one common issue families face is tube clogging. A clogged G-tube can interrupt nutrition and cause discomfort, but with proper care, clogging is preventable.
Here are the best practices to keep your child’s G-tube clear and working well.
1. Flush the G-Tube Regularly
Flushing the tube with water before and after feedings or medication helps prevent buildup.
- Use at least 30 mL of warm water (or more if recommended by your nurse)
- Flush after each feeding or medication dose
- For continuous feeding, flush every 4–6 hours or as directed
2. Use Proper Water Temperature
Use warm water, not hot or cold. Warm water helps dissolve formula or medication residues better, reducing clogging risk.
3. Administer Medications Correctly
- Crush or dissolve medications thoroughly if they must be given via G-tube
- Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on mixing and administration
- Give each medication separately and flush between each
4. Avoid Certain Foods or Formulas
Some formulas or foods may be thicker or more likely to clog. Talk to your dietitian or nurse about formulas suitable for your child’s G-tube.
5. Use Enzymatic or Mechanical Cleaning When Needed
If clogging starts:
- Try flushing with warm water and gentle pressure
- Your nurse may recommend special enzyme cleaners or carbonated beverages like soda (only under medical advice)
- Never forcefully flush to avoid damaging the tube
6. Keep the Feeding Set Clean
If you use a feeding pump or set:
- Clean and replace tubing as recommended
- Avoid letting formula sit in tubing for long periods
7. Follow a Consistent Care Routine
Consistency is key. Develop a regular schedule for feeding, flushing, and tube care, and stick to it.
When to Contact Your Nurse or Doctor
- If the tube clogs and flushing doesn’t help
- If the tube leaks, causes pain, or looks damaged
- If your child has symptoms like vomiting, discomfort, or fever
